Scottie Basham is an Educational Leadership and Policy Studies doctoral student at the University of South Florida. She is interested in highlighting the importance of student voice, particularly among marginalized youth and those who do not normally have their concerns taken seriously. Scottie is also interested in issues related to the history of education and how we can learn from this history to improve schools. She has been an educator for 13 years, primarily in secondary. Scottie has held key positions in education such as an Exceptional Education teacher, AVID Coordinator, and New Teacher Mentor. Currently, she is the Assistant Principal of Magnet Curriculum at Jefferson High School Leadership Academy, where she is collaboratively involved in implementing school wide student voice initiatives to ensure all students’ voices are taken seriously. Scottie is also a member of a team of site based and district personnel implementing student voice across the Hillsborough County school district to improve conditions for students and increase student engagement. Mrs. Basham’s is passionate about empowering young people to find their voice, be heard, and ultimately change the world.
